In 2007, ten years after the death of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, his nephew and disciple Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed a concert in London as a tribute to the great Pakistani singer. This concert has now been released as two separate CDs, one for each half of the performance. On the first, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his group perform traditional qawwali compositions – by Amir Khusrau, Bulleh Shah and Nusrat himself – albeit with an updated feel and contemporary instrumentation, including saxophone and bass guitar. The second disc is given over to a collaboration with Michael Brook, who worked closely with Nusrat on some of his most groundbreaking albums, culminating in an funky rendition of the perennial favourite ‘Dam Mast Qallandar’. The remaining three tracks are bonus tracks by Rahat's group and, incidentally, some of the best performances on the disc. Rahat is a great singer in his own right and many of the performances approach, if not quite match, the excitement of those of Nusrat in his prime and both of these albums are a welcome addition to the contemporary qawwali catalogue. While I can see the logic behind releasing two different CDs to cover the same concert – that they concentrate on what might be described as different aspects of Nusrat's musical life – the division seems a little capricious. A double CD would have been a better package. This essential unity – not only musically but also in spirit – is a tribute both to the musicians who participated in the recording and to Nusrat himself, who was so instrumental in so many ways in bringing qawwali to an international audience. Those looking for out-and-out traditional qawwali will not find it on these CDs, as the crossover element is heavily apparent here, but those who are real Nusrat devotees will definitely want to hear both discs, and either stands as a great tribute to a great singer.
