Jo Asgeir Lie has, for many years, played a prominent role in the Norwegian folk scene. As a highly regarded accordionist, arranger, composer and producer, he has contributed to over 20 recordings, his work ranging from classical and contemporary to jazz and traditional music (including the well-known group Kvarts). He's also rector at the prestigious Ole Bull Academy in Voss. Song til Nordavinden is both a glimpse into his musical universe and a celebration of his favourite tunes.
Without wishing to detract at all from his outstanding musicianship, creative imagination and exquisite playing, this CD pulls in some different directions. The traditional melodies that open the album are delightful, scampering tunes played with real joy and conviction. Lie's compositions for a Norwegian church music project show his gift for melody, and his collaborations with fiddler Olav Luksengård Mjelva deserve an album of their own. The less successful side of the CD involves the compositions featuring a larger band. Clearly they’re pieces for specific occasions with given instruments, but the piano, voice and trumpet don’t really belong on this album, which otherwise flies the traditional music flag so strongly.
