The third album from the Lyon-based group marks a slight departure from their previous two. Dance vibes rooted in Martiniquais and Guadeloupian rhythms still undergird a compelling combination of Afro-futurist jazz, neo-soul, classic and contemporary R&B and hip-hop. The difference this time is that it is noticeably more laid-back and thoughtful – a reflection of the emotions Dowdelin are bringing to the table. They describe Tchenbé! as their ‘therapeutic album’, ruminating on loss, separation and depression. But heavy themes don’t translate to heavy music. Instead, it’s full of hope – it still makes you move, but with a nod and a groove rather than pounding stomps. A new focus on live instrumentation over programmed beats gives an organic feel to the music’s flow, although the occasionally heavy use of AutoTune adds some digital intrusion that (to my ears) is not particularly necessary. Smooth vocals and some especially tasty flute round off a satisfying, mature sound.
