Joãozinho was previously a member of the idealistic and anti-imperialist ROSABEGE, and now, seemingly out of nowhere, produces this fully-formed, expansive and playful piece of work. Although originally from Niterói, he’s followed that (very) long bridge out of Rio, and recorded this album in his new home, looking at life in cold, alienating, money-oriented São Paulo, where everyone goes to find work and there’s no view of the sea. The title translates as ‘all too Global’, and in it you can hear The Black Ark studio in Jamaica, the Bahia of Gilberto Gil and the World of Echo of Arthur Russell. From start to finish the genre-bending parts make up a cohesive whole, ‘Cuidado!’ is a joyful Money Mark-styled bossa and has a contribution from Bebé, who’s also worth keeping an eye on, as well as Alceu. ‘VEJA (feat JOCA)’ booms with its deep layered chants and wailing sax. There’s an interlude in the middle with some loop-based pieces, and album closer ‘Exaustão! É Grande a Minha Fé!’ is a classic piece of Rio rap, something Marcelo D2 would be proud of, with carefree rhyming and samba choral accompaniment. All this dubbed-out lo-finess mixed with acoustic strumming brings to mind Manu Chao if his background was in Nação Zumbi instead of Mano Negra.
