In 2017 Swedish viola d’amore player Anna Ekborg Hans-Ers started to realise her dream of establishing a string trio grounded in Scandinavian folk music but including the previously untested combination of Hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa. When she took the idea to Hardanger fiddle player Jerker Hans-Ers and nyckelharpa player Petrus Dillner, Northern Resonance was born, with their first, self-titled album award-nominated in Sweden just a couple of years later. More recently, with international live success at the likes of Folk Alliance International (celebrated in Vision of Three with the track ‘Kansas City’) under their belts and the release of this crucial album looming, they proved one of the undisputed showcase hits of the recent Manchester Folk Festival/English Folk Expo 2023. “There was something more traditional about the first record; recorded live, no overdubs, a very acoustic record,” Anna explains. “This record is more produced, as if it were a pop record. We took more time in the studio and really found out how to get the best out of these instruments and the band.” In the process, Northern Resonance have crafted something genuinely exciting in Vision of Three, resonant with the joy of creating and playing music together with the confidence to push the boundaries of what Nordic folk music can be.
